The SD-3 is designed to measure specific optical density in a sealed chamber. A specimen is placed in front of a heater with or without a pilot flame and the off-gassing smoke is measured through optical density sensors.
The SD-3 is the most widely accepted instrument for the measurement of smoke produced by burning materials.
The SD-3 can be used for the analysis of toxic gas (available with optional equipment). *
